Met Tower Agreement

Gridlync land and infrastructure glossary.

A met tower agreement leases land for a meteorological tower used to measure wind or solar resource during a project’s development phase. Terms are usually shorter than the eventual project lease and may convert into one. It leases a small footprint for a sensor-laden tower, often for one to three years, to gather wind speed, direction, or solar irradiance data that supports financing. The agreement frequently includes a right to convert into the full project lease if the resource proves out.

Met tower leases mark the earliest land position in a wind or solar project. Gridlync tracks them and their conversion into long-term leases.

Example

Tradewind Energy signs a two-year met tower agreement with the Okafor family for a half-acre site at $4,000 a year to measure wind speeds, with an option to roll the parcel into a 35-year turbine lease once the data confirms the resource.
